Shining Lights in the Night

It’s Christmas time, and I am thinking of sparkling lights all around town, brightening up doorways of homes and blinking on trees along the streets.  The lights glittering in the night somehow make me feel happy. When God sees our lives shining in the dark night, He feels happy, too.  Matthew 5:16 says, “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in Heaven.”

My mind is remembering some other bright lights, my deaf friends in Liberia.  As my husband and I arrive at church, a group of young deaf ladies surround me.  They are all smiles and dressed in their best from head to toe.  They greet me warmly with strong handshakes and then proceed to communicate through sign language and panomime.  Being half blind, I can barely see their gestures,  so we search for a scrap of paper and a stubble of a pencil.  At this point, several young deaf men crowd their way into our circle to add their teaching expertise.  All of us join the fun, writing and laughing until our vocal chords are raw!

How I love my Liberian deaf friends—those smiling, hard working, friendly, sharing people.  They are truly lights in the night   Would you like to be a part of their lives?  They are in need of American sign language materials for their group.  If you are interested in sending them packages this Christmas, please email their pastors for shipping arrangements.
