Your Gifts Bring Hope
January 5th, 2008

8-year old David lives next door to his friends Enoch and Gary, Jr. Often I would see the boys kicking a flattened soccer ball back and forth across their yards. Other times I saw them chasing each other around their homes playing tag. Sometimes I watched them as they sat on the porch chatting, taking turns wearing an American baseball cap and a pair of fashionable sunglasses. Almost always, the boys were smiling and laughing.
But one day I noticed that David was not playing; he had been crying! You see, his sick father had died unexpectedly while his mother was away ‘up country’, and David had to tell her the terrible news when she came home. That was a very hard thing to do. For several days David heard his mother crying and wailing! Soon their food ran out, and there was not even charcoal to boil water. David was hungry and sad—-very sad.
But because of your gifts, Awana Boys and Girls, Luukkonens were able to buy huge bags of rice and charcoal for David and his mother. Happily, Enoch and Gary Jr. wheelbarrowed the bags over to their friend David’s house! The next day, David was laughing and playing again!
