My city friends would frequently ask me, “How can you, a white woman, tie your ‘lappa’ so fine?” “I grew up near an African village,” I would respond.. “Look,” I would show them, “I can carry a baby on my back, a bucket of water on my head, and sweep, all at the same time!” “You a country woman, yah!” my friends would reply with a grin. “Yeh-o.” I smiled back.
